I am Elaine Belay a reading specialist and reading recovery teacher. I began my career in the medical field. When I was off for seven years raising my three boys, I got my bachelors in elementary education at Virginia Tech. I taught 2nd grade at Shawsville Elementary School for many years.
Then I took reading recovery training in 2004-2005. I did this and taught second grade. Next I went back to school and got my master’s in reading from Radford. It opened up a world of passion for me. I was always reading as a child and it is my true love. Nothing is more satisfying than to see a child be successful at reading. It does take time and effort.
Reading recovery involves one on one teaching for struggling first grade readers. It is well researched and a well respected program. It has a lot of success for struggling readers and is very child oriented.
I moved to Eastern Montgomery Elementary School when it opened. I enjoy my job and working with the primary students. I have many fond memories of past students.
